Hello everyone. Today's blog is going to have more of a serious tone, as this topic is very serious. Now everyone knows I support the Divas in WWE. A lot of people don't respect them, but I feel like if I support the Superstars, I might as well support the Divas. Now lately, our Divas Division has not been great. I will always support the division, but I can't help to think that this division is crumbling. Look above. Look at that division. We have girls that can wrestle, have charisma, have athleticism, and bring in viewers collectively. With all of that in mind, why is it that the division isn't showcasing that on TV? I will tell you why. Today I am going to list 5 ways to improve the division based on the errors creative is making. Here we go...
1. Let the Divas Maximize Their Move-Set:
This one makes me mad. We have girls in this division that can pull of some cool stuff. I am so sick of seeing the same moves in the matches. I don't blame that on the girls themselves, because I know for a fact that someone tells them to not outshine the men. That is ridiculous. Paige is a prime example. She even revealed in Jericho's Podcast that she was told to "slow down" and to "water down" her moves. Excuse me? What do you mean? I understand the slow it down part, because some girls can't keep up with the quick pace. However, "water down" your moves is ridiculous. I am sure if you asked any girl in the back "Hey Paige is going to give you a Tornado DDT of the top rope", I am sure they would want it. How are you going to keep the crowd interested if they see the same things. And another thing with move-set, why is it that heels can do all these cool spots and babyfaces can't? When I go back and watch matches, I notice that the babyface barely gets any offense and they get beat up the entire match. Then they do a comeback and hit their finisher. Like who made it like that? Every Diva should be able to deliver any move they want in match without question. If it is a crazy spot, then have them practice the move before doing it on TV. It is not that hard. I know every Diva is capable of putting on a great match, if they are given free will when it comes to their performance. WWE needs to get on top of this. Natalya even said one time "If the crowd was into it, then we did our job". That needs to reign true every single time, doesn't matter what show or what match slot. Let the Divas go out there and put on a show.
Okay so the #GiveDivasAChance was rooted from the 30 second match between the Bella's, Paige, and Emma. Brie getting the win on Emma in only 30 seconds. Now ever since then we have been getting decent time for the Divas on TV. But, I notice over time they are going back to short matches. 5 minutes or less is not enough. My issue, as well as other fans, isn't really about the TV match times. It is more about their PPV matches. It is very hard to tell a story in 6 minutes. WWE needs to let the divas have more time to leave a profound impression on the fans and the crowd. You have a 3 hour Raw and your giving divas 5-7 minutes? That doesn't make any sense. I know there is time. The time they could have is taken up by too many backstage segments and promos that are unnecessary. Of course, I am appreciative that we even get a match for them. Of course, I am appreciative that they even get a PPV match. The fans can only appreciate so much WWE. When we get to PPV's, you need to let these title matches be at least 12 minutes. That is all we are asking. We are not asking for a 30 minute main event spot, we are asking for 10-15 minutes. Imagine, if the Divas had a 12 minute title match on PPV, the fans would be into it. You have to make the Divas matches worth watching and worth the wait. If you have maximized move-sets and lengthy matches for them, you are already heading in the right direction.
Everyone knows that promos are important. They are important not only for the character, but important for the feud they are in. Promos are what sell matches and get the fans interested. Recently, Kevin Owens and John Cena had a series of in-ring promos, and fans were into it. And it made fans look forward to the match even more. This needs to happen for the Divas. Divas need to have a voice in WWE. You can't keep having them on commentary and having them say their thoughts through there. And plus, crowds can't hear commentary so it makes the fans less engaged. Currently we have a story brewing between Paige and The Bella Twins, and I want them to have an in-ring promo. I want Divas to be able to be put on that platform, so fans can get more engaged into their storylines. In-Ring promos for the Divas in the past have made people more interested in the "big match". I can remember the in-ring promo from Kaitlyn and AJ Lee before their Payback match, which was arguably one of the best feuds over the Divas Title of this era. And then some fans want to say that some Divas can't talk on the mic. Well the only way they will get better is if they have live exposure. You only get better with practice. And I think if Divas have more in-ring promos it wont only help them as characters, but engage the fans in the storyline.
Speaking of storylines, WWE needs to improve them for the Divas. The Bella Twins did a interview with The Sun and Nikki claimed "I've really enjoyed our storyline even though I feel bad at times because like I don't want to make fun of the color of her skin, like I'm brown, she's pale, who gives a crap". That just shows you that the Divas are always in storylines that involve looks. It has been recycled like crazy. There are those rare storylines that don't involve looks, but a lot do. I remember the story between Kelly Kelly, Eve, and The Divas of Doom. That story was all about looks, all about Kelly and Eve looking like the "typical Barbie diva". There is so much more you can do as far as storylines. Why can't WWE just have 2 girls dislike each other and want to kick each other's ass. Just 2 girls both wanting to be champion and doing whatever it takes to be champion. The storyline between Kaitlyn and AJ was so good, just because it was so different. AJ playing mind games and giving gifts to Kaitlyn, acting like a secret admirer. It was interesting to see because it wasn't about looks, it was about mind games. WWE needs to be more creative with storylines over the championship.
WWE has a total of about 12 Divas on the roster. Only about 2-4 are used at a time. That is because WWE only does Diva storylines with the title. You have all these girls in the back not being used, unless WWE wants a one off match on Superstars or Main Event. When was the last time I saw Cameron, Summer Rae, Alicia Fox, Emma, Natalya, or Layla on a Raw or Smackdown? It has been a while. That is 6 divas right now that are not being used. You can easily start up something with those girls, or a few of them at least. Emma is down in NXT reinventing herself, and sooner or later she will be back on the main roster. I would hate for her to come back up only to just sit in the back and do nothing. A side storyline you could start is between Layla, Alicia, and Natalya. It could be a feud of who is the real veteran of the divas division. See that is something that is small and it involves 3 top workers in the division. They can have series of matches with each other and they can incorporate the other divas for some tag matches. And then all 3 can have a Triple Threat at a PPV. See that is something you can do, and I know there would be time for the storyline on Raw and Smackdown. I remember back in the Summer of 2014 we had 4 Diva storylines. You had Naomi/Cameron, Layla/Summer, Brie/Stephanie, and Alicia/Paige. And all of these storylines got exposure between Raw, Main Event, and Smackdown. So I know there is definitely time for 2 Diva storylines.
Now what I mean by that is WWE being more competitive with NXT. NXT is arguably its own brand in the fans eyes. We as fans see NXT as competition for WWE. Vince being the man he is, I know he loves viewership and ratings. Well NXT is getting more fans by the minute. And when it come to Divas, NXT has WWE beat by a long shot. If Vince is hearing all these great things about the Divas in NXT and how they are catching the fans eyes like crazy, you would think he would step it up. Bring back your fans, bring them back to your product. Make the Divas on the main roster out-perform the NXT Divas. Let these girls go out there and put on the show they know how to do. Let the girls go out there and do the moves they want. Who cares if they outshine the men, if anything, that will make the Superstars step up even more. It's a win-win for everyone.
7. Bring Back Former Divas:
Okay everyone knows, in order to build up the division is to have Divas that the fans love. We have a excellent group currently in WWE. They are all talented and they are a great bunch, but bringing back some Divas wouldn't hurt anyone or anything. WWE needs to pick up the phone and reach out to other Divas from the past. Some girls I can think off the top of my head are Kaitlyn, Kelly Kelly, Aksana, and Eve Torres. I know some say they are retired, but anyone can come out of retirement considering they are all still young. Kelly was one of the most over babyface divas of all time, so I know fans would love to see her back. There is many they could reach out to, they can even reach out into the Indy Scene. Bring in Divas that bring viewers and bring back ones that can add something beneficial to the Divas Division.
The Queen Bee, Stephanie McMahon needs to have more involvement with the Divas. She is a woman of Authority, literally. She has the power to possibly change things for the Divas. She need to be more involved with them on TV as well. She can come out on Raw saying that she is now the Chief Officer of the Divas Division. Yes, I made that name up, but they can come up with a role for that. Fans everywhere know who Stephanie is, and she is the one person of power that can truly bring prominence back to the Divas Division. There was a repot that came out saying Triple H and Stephanie are looking to change the fans perception of the Divas on Main Roster. Well they can start by making Stephanie involved on screen.
Okay this one is something that is important. There was a report that came out that Vince said that there isn't any heels and faces in the divas division, they are all just bi-polar...... NO SIR. You can't not have heels and faces in the division. Fans cheer and boo for who they want, but that distinction is still needed. I don't know if WWE thinks that fans don't notice small things, but we do. I remember back in 2012, it was around the time of Layla being champion. It was a 6 Divas Tag Match of Eve, Layla, and Kaitlyn (the faces) vs Beth, Natalya, and Alicia Fox (the heels). So this was fine, until 2 weeks later the fans noticed something. 2 weeks later Alicia Fox would team with Layla to face Beth and Eve. Are you kidding me? She was a heel 2 weeks ago, and now all the sudden she is a face. Fans notice every detail when it comes to our Superstars/Divas. WWE needs to stop having unexplained heel and face turns. The Bella Twins have been the latest victims of this sadly. I love these girls to death, but WWE has turned them twice in the amount of 1 month. They randomly turned Brie and Nikki face because Naomi was the heel in the feud. And then this past week, The Bella Twins brought back Twin Magic and "turned heel". Paige is the face in this situation, so of course they turn the Bella's. It wasn't really explained, but fans know that The Bella Twins are now heels again. I understand WWE likes to have their Heel vs Face feuds, but it is okay to have Heel vs Heel or Face vs Face. You don't need to turn someone just because the other is a heel or face. It is pointless to do so. WWE needs to solidify who is a heel and face. WWE also needs to have random turns that aren't really explained and let the Divas have Face vs Face or Heel vs Heel feuds.
The Divas get most of their storyline progression from Raw over any other show throughout the week. Raw is Live, and it is considered the "A" show. Okay so for weeks now the Divas have been in the 3rd hour of Raw. I know what WWE is doing. I am not stupid. Everyone knows that the 1st and 2nd hour feature the "important" stuff and the 3rd hour is used to cool off the crowd before the "main event". Why do the Divas have to be the "cool off" match or segment. Like I remember when Divas used to be the opening match of Raw after the opening promo. And that goes back to my point earlier about longer matches. If your in the 3rd hour your match is going to be really short or it is going to be cut. There have been those rare occurrences where the Divas were in the 3rd hour and they got some good time, but its a rare thing. WWE needs to start putting Divas in the 1st or 2nd hour to show that the Divas are worth everyone's time. And I have been to plenty of live shows, the 3rd hour is sometimes a snooze for fans. When I go to Raw's I notice that the crowd is not as engaged during the 3rd hour as they are for the 1st and 2nd. In the 3rd hour everyone is ready to see the main event, so fans don't really pay much attention or engage in the matches.
